Just J, what is that supposed to mean? In the end it's simple, J is the first letter of my name. How did I become known as Just J? Well, that's a little more complicated, and even funny.
When I started out, I called myself DJ Wolve, because I was a fan of Wolverine from the X-Men. As I progressed, and began spinning at a bar, I needed a better name. The first day I was nameless, and indecisive. The manager, bouncer, my friends, and I began trying to think of a name. The manager and bouncer were fond of a strip club called Platinum, a place they went to almost every night. They began calling me that, but I didn't like it.
I kept thinking, and noticed I was fond of Tribal gear. Friends suggested DJ Tribal, it sounded ok at the time, so I went with it. I was known as DJ Tribal for quite some time, but I grew unhappy with the name. My promoter's wife also mentioned her feelings on my name. She felt it made people think I spun Tribal Techno or Tribal House, when I spun Hard Trance. Possibly confusing, I agreed, and told her I was thinking of a new name. After going thru many names, I got a suggestion from a friend on my other site, DJ Forums. He suggested J, just J, no DJ, no J Smooth, just J. I liked it's simplicity, and mystery, so I went with it. I brought it up to my promoter and his wife, and they liked it.
So, how did the Just get added on? My girlfriend coined it. At an event we were at, my promoter's wife asked her what my name was to be sure as she gave out my CDs. My girlfriend, who was a bit inebriated, said "his name is J, Just J." They replied, "Just J? Just J. I like that!" We asked others their thoughts, and the answer was unanimous, they liked it, and Just J stuck.
